| Member | I have one foumer-hosted forum in the phpBB2 format (tts2project.8.forumer.com). Roughly within a month's time from now, I'll need to create a 2nd forum for the project we're involved in. I considered creating it sooner to save time. As opposed the the forum I already have, the other will need to have admins other than myself, which I am reluctant to do with phpBB2 as long as the FAP (or whatever the name is of what identifies you as an owner) is broken. It took me long enough to grasp how the forum works in the phpBB2 format and I understand, perhaps mistakenly, that phpBB3 is quite more complicated for someone as alien to these things as myself, and still quite buggy. On top of that, the release date for the feature allowing the upgrade between the formats is foggy at best. My question then, is whether I should create the forum on the phpBB2 format which I've been able to comprehend and hope that the transition to phpBB3 will happen within that month's time (so I can allow other admins while avoiding possible forum abduction), or stretch it and wait until phpBB3 comes out and is generally considered fixed and stable (which may be well past the time in which I need it)? | Elite Forumer ![]() | Create an IPB one, that is the best and the admin panel has a fine tune so your admins will have much less privileges than you and they will NOT be able to delete or in any way edit the route admin account.........and the good news is.......I can help you with the IPB better than if it was phpBB ![]() It's full of bugs as it is now, and well..........we have no eta about when it will be ready, if he has to create a forum now I would definitely go for IPB.... but that's me ![]() Your choice ![]() Last edited by Wild Cat; 04-22-2008 at 06:21 PM. |

Rep Power: 13 ![]() ![]() ![]() fTrader: (36) My Forumer My Country: | I beg to differ :P phpBB3 has more features and security ![]() Check this link regarding the upgrades from phpBB2 to phpBB3. Also, look at this link comparing phpBB3 and other paid software (vBulletin, IPB etc.) Furthermore, the software isn't buggy with itself, it's do with compatibility issues, because the technicians need to edit the files to make it work. You could just register a phpBB3 forum, right now and familiarize yourself with the software and check out the articles at the Knowledge Base before you make your transition to making a new forum, and actively have a community. | Member | Oh, dear god. If it wasn't hard enough as it is, hehe. I didn't even consider IPB, as it even has different letters to what I barely managed to get used to! ![]() Can you perhaps provide a link to an IPB forum that has a fairly large amount of categories and sub-boards (as mine will essentially be that as well), so I can get a feel? |

However, regardless of why it is currently incompatible, or unstable, etc. the issue remains that the owner access (as opposed to admin access) may not be ready by the time I need it, as Wild Cat mentions.

| Elite Forumer ![]() | My advice is make yourself a test board from both IPB and phpBB3 and see for yourself what you like to me IPB is much more strait forward and there is already a lot of help for it, phpBB3 is still in testing and to me the admin panel looks confusing even though I can work my way around it... Also check out the Knowledge base. there are some flash tutorials about phpBB3 which can help you and the IPB help files have a lot of info in them too... |

| Member | Thank you for the links provided. They do, however, raise at least two other questions. I've noticed that it says that phpBB3 allows for 'Subforums - unlimited nesting levels'. I would like to know two things. 1 - Does IPB allow the same? 2 - Am I understanding it correctly? I believe that what that means is that any one of my forums could also contain another forum within it alongside threads. As opposed to phpBB2 where forums are one level and threads are another and that's that. |

Rep Power: 13 ![]() ![]() ![]() fTrader: (36) My Forumer My Country: | 1) Wild Cat can assist you. 2) Basically if you have a vague topic, let's say 'Sports' then you can subforums like Football, Baseball, Hockey, Golf, Tennis etc, that will be totally new secton, but just makes your sections less cluttered. Or I am missing something here? Sorry if I don't answer your question. Last edited by SawanM; 04-22-2008 at 12:44 PM. |

| Elite Forumer ![]() | there are no unlimited nesting levels of sub forums in IPB, you can have a forum belonging to the category and a sub forum belonging to the forum........ you can not have a sub forum belonging to the sub forum....but then it will over complicate the forum if there are hundreds of sub sub forums anyway IMO........ in IPB in can be similar as it this forum here is organized ( I mean fhq) Quote:

The Sports section can still be posted in, just the same as the fBucks Swap meet.

| Member | Alright, it is as I thought. Knowing that now, despite not having planned it, it's something that can do me a great service, as I'll be having groups within groups within groups on the new forum, and unlimited subforums will definitely allow to handle it better than via threads. One final question, now that I know what I want; Does phpBB3, as it is now, allows for owner access or is this feature broken for both formats? |
