Is there any way to move a sub thread and contents into another area on the forum?

Yes, go to the bottom right of your particular forum and click on "moderate this forum" and simply select the posts you wish to move. If its an entire forum you wish to move the contents from you will need to go into your control panel and "delete" the forum - it will actually give you a list of options including delete all posts etc or move them to another forum.
