Bad news first: you cannot change the max. size of the avatar (see
>>here #17 in Jacko's post - one would presume you've already read this

).
Good news is that you can still upload your avatar. Just use a bit of compression or remove some superfluous EXIF information from your .jpg image. See images in the attachment below saved using
IrfanView (freeware): 3.6kB even without any compression (awsome100.jpg), and 1.6kB with some compression (awsome75.jpg). Actually you won't notice any difference between them (and the original).
