I'm using the "Play" skin. Despite uploading a permissable avatar which shows up in my profile, no avatars appear in any posts.

Is this a problem with the "play" skin? Or is there something else I should be doing?

May be you have changed the avatar setting in the administration panel

Check it and its paths

Ah, the problem is, lol, that the Play skin doesn't show avatars.

Majicman, you are absolutely right. As soon as I switch to another skin, the avatars appear. Go figure...
