Hiya...
I realise we are not allowed to have advertisment banners for other websites unless its ur own - but what is the rule on site sponsor topics rooms??

I mean the forum im currently running is for car enthusiasts in and around Bolton, UK. There are various companies who we may be contacting in the future to help sponsor our website to help the everday running on the site... In return, I would like to set up a dedicated area for them on the forum where members of the forum can ask questions about products and services they might sell and offer... is this the same as displaying a banner or would this be allowed on the forums as long as there were no banners?

That is correct. You can place text links to sponsor site, or small graphic buttons to sponsor sites as long as you, or nobody else is making a profit from those buttons and/or links being there.
