How can I increase the maximum file size for attachments to a post (current maximum is 48.83 mb)?

Yes you can. But you will have to do it by user groups.

Admin CP >> Users and Groups >> Select Desired User group and then click edit group >> Look for "POST: Max upload file size (in K" and increase the size as required.

There is a fixed limit for the max file size to be uploaded but you can change the upload size for the different user groups, but there is always a max file size limit. It is much lower than 48.83 mb I'm afraid.
