Default User with IP 127.0.0.1

Hi.

A user called smileywily have registered at my board from IP adress 127.0.0.1...
I have once before had a user registered that posted spam about something called Icontool, and i figured maybe this smileywily character might be up to something similar so i suspended the account. Guest can write, so why these guys sign up, i don't know.

But what i really want to know is how it's possible to register with that ip!?

I have smileywily as well, who spammed about RLights... as well as three icontool spam things as well.

However, if you're wondering about that IP thing... I bet the person is blocking his or her IP from showing. This can be done on school servers (I can login as a user with IP 127.0.0.1 tomorrow! :P) as for at home, I dunno how.

If enybody is giving your problems, then set your warning to about 5, (set it to how many you want), or just ban the users ip, and then he wont be able to come into your forum enymore.

I believe it is called invasion of privacy if you go around and post someone elses IP address.

Goto your Admin CP>>>Users and Groups>>>Find/Edit/Suspend User. Or you could go to ban settings and input the ip address or email address.

Well, I can't ban his IP if i don't know what his IP is... Or would a ban of 127.0.0.1 force these people to always show their real IP?

Kurisu:
127.0.0.1 is the IP-number for local host. It's sort of what your own computer calls it self. In other words: no invasion of privacy here.

yeah, i have that IP on my board as well... i was going to ban it, but i always search my members IPs before i ban(cuz i usually ban partial IP, 127.0.*). when i searched i found 4 people with the same IP.

my guess was that they all had IP scramblers(or whatever they are called, i have one too), or they are all the same user. but the other three id's have been there longer and i've had no trouble form them.

so i just banned his name. oh well.

Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!

well don't ban 127.0.0.1 as you would possible ban yourself then.

ip banning is quite useless anyway, almost no one nowadays has a static ip address...

it's very rare if the ip is dynamic that only one octet changes, so partial ip ban is useless as well + potentially even harmfull to your community since you also ban good people...

no... it's not.

i always check first... to see if any other members are using the same ISP. let's say the IP is 123.45.67.8... i check 123.45.67.*, if no one is using it i then check, 123.45.*, if no one is using that IP i ban it.

so what if an innocent user tries to register that has that IP afterwards? well, you can use validation like he said, or just not care like i do.

i have tons of members... not looking for bigger numbers.

well I don't want to ban innocents nor bother with admin validation.

I believe you didn't quite understand me it's useless because dynamic ips have tendancies to have changes in other octets nowadays in such a way that the only sufficient ban would be *.*.*.*
