I see that we are not allowed to have a copy of the database for our forum. Are you doing this to us just so we stay with your service? This is very harsh. Is there no way I can transfer my forum to my dotcom. I don't want to start again as there would be a lot of angry people on my forum that will find their posts are deleted... So why don't you let us have a copy of the database?

Because it would leave the whole network wide open to hacking and everyone on these forums would pay the price for it. It's a security measure.

If you don't have too many messages, create an archive on your new forum and put the old messages in there in text form. Failing that - grab the newer threads only.

I think if we were all hacked that would be considerably harsher than the current situation. There is a service provider (no names) who was recently hacked so I've seen it happen.

Correct. We are not going to be able to provide you with a backup of your forum because of the security issues.

No you can't get a copy of your SQL under any reason. Forumer uses these only if the main server crashes. Which then they do it on their own.

I know many people complain about this I believe we should get it. However, I don't complain to much. I just believe that if people can't handle their MySQL and get hacked its their problem. I know that forumer has to deal with complaints but I trust people are responsible.

What I think Forumer could do is have an agrement that says:

"After recieving MySQL any problems relating hackers is your responsiblity ."

And then maybe that:

"You have been warned grasshopper"

Or something of the sort. But just a thought. I hope I answered your question

I think offering mysql backups in the admin cp is a security problem for everyone?

Its fair not to offer mysql backups to users as long as forumer keeps updating its phpbb, and hopefully ipb 1.3 doesn't have any known security holes.

Forumer does not offer backups to members. I don't know if it will remain like this forever in the future, but this is our policy at the moment. I'm sure you can understand.

the main server seems to crash every day then. I thot that if you have 500+ members and 50k + posts you WOULD get the backup files?! that USED to be the rule and weve heard nothing different. Whats wrong with limes going in to the server and handing over the forum, A) its gona save HIM space and b) it means that the member who could also promote forumer.com gets what they want, both happy!

It's not that easy. It poses a security issue plus you would haeve to deal with MySQL tables in order to retrieve the database.

So, at this time no backups are being offered to members. This is much the same with other forum hosting companies. We appreciate your feedback, we always consider it.
