'Stupid' question maybe, but is there any way we can receive an email notification when someone posts a message?

Yes, I believe it is possible, but only if you can subscribe to each thread meaning you'll miss an email when a thread is posted and possibly a few posts after that.

Exactly why it's easier just to check your forum on a regular basis
