| Junior Forumer ![]() | Ok so I created customized rank banners for my forum using word & some fancy cropping. I didn't have photoshop and I'm not a graphic artist so I did the best I could even though it is rudimentary. Now I have downloaded a photoshop CS4 trial to try & improve them but I really can't figure out how to do what I want. What I want to do (at lease what I think I want to do) is have the color start out black at the edges (I'm thinking the vertical edges) and gradually lighten to my desired color towards the middle. Anyone know how I can (of if I can) do that in Photoshop or if there is other software that will do that? |

| GFX Designer ![]() | Here is one way to do that... ![]() You'll want to do this on a seperate layer, so you can change the blend mode if needed. I threw this together kind of fast, so let me know if you need help understanding anything. While you are holding down the shift key to make the gradient, you'll want to click the mouse button at the top red star and drag. My workspace is also a little different than most, so ignore the animation panel and such. ![]() Last edited by Larah; 10-13-2009 at 12:40 AM.. |

| Junior Forumer ![]() | I just tried it & one, I couldn't figure out how to get it to use the color that I wanted which for the first one is red. All of them are going to have different colors. All it would do is black and yellow (which I'm guessing is suppose to be white). Two, it covered my text which is already on the picture (these are the uncolored versions of what I'm already using). Three it went across the entire picture. Another thing is that the gradient pattern that it shows is backwards compared to what is in your picture. I don't know if that matters. ![]() |

| GFX Designer ![]() | Yours is supposed to match mine. You can either check the box next to the option on top that says "Reverse" or change the colors by clicking on the gradient on top. I made a quick video demonstrating how to do it. I hope it will make more sense. You will just change the white in the gradient to the color you want to use. Make sure it is on a seperate layer, and then choose "Multiply" or a similar blend mode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTcgsc8lAwI Sorry about the noises, my birds decided they wanted to be in the video. ![]() |

| Junior Forumer ![]() | Oh you made a video for me? How sweet. Well I'll have to study that & break it down because its kind of fast. Your result didn't look at all how I was imagining it so maybe I'm heading in the wrong direction. One spot of red in a circle isn't what I had in mind. I do want to find something that look different than just plain color but I guess now that I don't know what. Anyway if you want to you can see one of them here. Do you have any suggestions? I'm not into graphics so I don't have that mentality. |

| GFX Designer ![]() | Looks good. ![]() Sorry the video is so fast, I couldn't edit it. ![]() Umm...There are many other methods to get the results you are looking for. I basically learned by looking up Photoshop tutorials and experimenting. Maybe you could try a layer mask or something. I'm not completely sure I understand exactly what you are trying to do. |

| Junior Forumer ![]() | A layer mask? I know nothing about that? I've never actually tried to use photo shop before. I guess I'm not sure what I'm trying to do other than to do more than have it in plain color but maybe I'll just stick with that. IDK. What do you suggest? Do you have any ideas? Do you see a way to improve that & make it look more unique? |

| GFX Designer ![]() | I think I would make it look a little more like the buttons on your forum. Maybe round the edges a tiny bit, you know? These are some good tutorials to get your started. http://www.designvitality.com/blog/2...ton-tutorials/ The site I learned the most from when I was starting out is http://www.tutorialized.com but there are many out there. ![]() |
