I definatley agree, this render isn't so great IMO. If you took a little more time on this it probably could've been 10x better than it is now. The message you are trying to put out in this piece of artwork isn't so clear since this banner isn't really funky or fun, its just effects slapped onto text with a plain background, which isn't very artistic. If you want this banner to be funky and fun you might want to think more abstractly.

Even though it is quite simple, I think that is good for a forum banner
