I have seen people stuggle to get traffic and members to join their forum and website, and finally after a long time they give thinking that what they have made sucks, while in fact it doesn't. Well to help them and u out getting more traffic I will write down here how I got 900 visitors a day instead of the bairly a 100 I had.
] Topsites: In my opinion topsites are underestimated. They give you backlinks and targeted traffic wich eventually will lead to people registering and posting to your forum/blog or website
] Link exchanges: Well this fact every webmaster knows I think (or should know) but when having linkexchanges you also get backlinks from other website wich eventually will lead to better result in searchengines and thus more tardeted traffic.
] PR (Page rank) Try to get your page rank up. I know it doesn't help your optimization in searchengines but many people do put valeu on it. It is also atracting when you want to earn a bit of cash when selling links. The higher the PR is from a website the more you can earn.
] Orginality: try to be original, I know that is hard. Almost every subject on the world does at least has like a 1000 website's already. Try to have a 2nd importantr subject that fits with the first. I for one have a final fantasy forum. There are thousands of those, but I also have a role play embeded in it. Not many final fantasy forums have that. Certainly not one with a shop real exp etc.
]Change: Change is also a verry important thing to earn traffic. People like to see a website change often and added new stuff, from images to articles.
] Feel: Try to keep your forum/website/blog as simple as possible yet atractive. Do remind yourself that some people are colourblind (like me) and that they do not like to dark or to light colours. Keep it fresh and nutral.
] Mouth to mouth talk: Well that's actually the best way of gaining members. If you website does have the 'x-factor' people wanna tell other friends about it. Those friends will take a look, like it (or not) join (or not) and tell their friends, etc etc.
] Staff: This is certainly important when running a forum, good nice staff with not a to big ego. I have seen forums go down because the staff became to strict and with such a big ego people didn't like having conversations with them. Keep the staff nice friendly. They must rather feel like a friend than police.
These are 8 points I always try to stick to and it certainly gave me some good fruits. I do hope it will give you to!
