Well IPB has more flexibility than phpBB2 but in the near future all forumer phpBB2 boards will get the chance to upgrade to phpBB3 which offers more flexibility.

I am sorry but forumer doesn't offer backups so if you want to switch to IPB or to self hosting you are basically starting anew.
