I can definately confirm that
this is a bug on almost all Forumer's phpBB servers. It is related to "quote bug" harassing people since June 2006 (sic!) and the way this bug has been "fixed" (I wouldn't dare to say it has been successfully fixed -- hence the quotes
). Another related bug is when you post a closing [/quote] without opening it - the result is in most cases shocking - the layout gets distorted.
I'm afraid, this knowledge won't help you much, I don't know any work around for the backslash problem.
